Metaverse Lab of Innovation

Okinawa Institute for Sustainability and Entrepreneurship

For over 25 years, our institution has actively engaged in collaborative initiatives involving industry, academia, and government. Our interdisciplinary research spans both the humanities and the sciences. We regularly participate in international conferences such as ISPIM, UIIN, and AUTM, which serve as global platforms for innovation experts, practitioners, and policymakers. These engagements have included visits to numerous leading universities and research institutions worldwide.

In Okinawa Prefecture, we have been instrumental in cultivating an innovation ecosystem aimed at advancing entrepreneurship education. Additionally, with more than 30 years of experience in information and communication technology (ICT), we have been promoting research and education related to digital transformation (DX). In particular, our recent work has focused on research and development involving the metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI).

About Ryukyu Metaverse Lab

With the metaverse and AI as its two wings, this lab shall take flight toward the future.

Innovation is a central theme in contemporary business administration and economics on a global scale. In addressing pressing environmental challenges—most notably climate change—Japan’s regional development policies, industries, communities, and governmental agencies are collectively seeking to cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial human capital.

Our institution is engaged in dynamic collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders, including business leaders, entrepreneurs, creatives, entertainers, and policymakers, to organize specialized seminars and co-create an innovation ecosystem. Through these initiatives, we aim to investigate the essence of innovation from both theoretical and applied perspectives.

Moreover, our research extends into the evolving nature of 21st-century management, grounded in the emerging field of Happiness Studies and Well-being—a domain that has garnered increasing international attention as a critical lens for sustainable development and organizational transformation.

Innovation from Ryukyu Islands

100% for the Planet

The Ryukyu Metaverse Lab engages in cross-disciplinary research at the intersection of emerging science, advanced technologies, innovation theory, and policy studies—focusing on domains expected to become central to society within the next 10 to 20 years. Building on a longstanding commitment to ICT integration, the Lab also leads pioneering initiatives in digital transformation (DX) across both business and educational sectors.

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, digital literacy has become indispensable. Regardless of disciplinary background—whether in the humanities or the sciences—competencies in artificial intelligence, robotics, data science, and related digital technologies are now foundational.

Looking ahead, we anticipate a dynamic future shaped by entrepreneurship and collaborative innovation across fields.

Flying Professor
Independent Research Artist

Creating Happiness for Islanders

The head of our laboratory, Tamaki Osumi, is affectionately called the “Flying Professor” or “Trailblazing Professor” because he travels freely around the world, has a highly creative mindset, and often takes action before the usual “ready, set, go” signal. He retired from University of the Ryukyus upon reaching the mandatory retirement age in March 2024 and was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus.
